The word Taliban means students, and they like to call themselves the Students of Islamic Knowledge Movement.
The Taliban really began during Afghanistan's civil war, which is when the Soviet's took control. The minute they left, the mujahideen (freedom fighters) took over and took over the capital of Kubal. The Taliban started under the direction of Mullah Muhammad Omar, who brought a very strict interpretation of Islamic Law.

The Taliban had very strict rules for their people including no kite-flying, no television, music, or internet. Anything non-Islamic, was considered an influence. Men had to wear beards and could be subjected to beatings if they didn't. Women were no longer allwed to go to school. Women were also no longer allowed to work outside the home or leave the house without a male relative. Women couldn't wear fingernail polish or couldn't leave without their burkas.
The Taliban profited from smuggling operations which was mainly electronics and opium cultivation. Opium cultivation is making illegal drugs which include opium which can be anywhere from heroin to marijuana.
Afghanistan is a Muslim nation and 90% of it's population are Sunni Muslims. After the first few years of the Taliban they were in charge of running schools, churches, shrines and anything religious. The original Taliban leaders were educated in Pakistan in refugee camps which they fled to during the Soviet take over. The worst part is that we gave them weapons and trained them because we were trying to get back at Russia when later down the road, little to our knowledge, they were going to use these gifts against us.
